NEW YORK UNIVERSITY WASHINGTON MEWS RENOVATION
Institutional Renovation NYC
Adaptive Reuse for Cultural and Academic Community
ABOUT THE PROJECT:
The adaptive reuse of landmarked carriage houses on Washington Mews in Greenwich Village created a dynamic home for New York University’s International Cultural Institutes. Approved by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission, the project transforms former studio buildings into flexible academic and cultural spaces, including conference rooms, lecture halls, exhibition galleries, and performance venues. Original cobblestone pavers were reconstructed to preserve the character of the 200-year-old street while new accessible sidewalks meet contemporary code requirements. From Deutsches Haus to Africa House and China House, each institute balances historic preservation with modern infrastructure, ensuring that these landmark structures support global scholarship, community engagement, and cross-cultural dialogue for decades to come.
