SUNY GENESEO DOTY BUILDING RENOVATION
Institutional Building Design

Reimagining Doty Hall for Music, Community, and Sustainability

ABOUT THE PROJECT:

At SUNY Geneseo, the adaptive reuse of historic Doty Hall transforms the former Geneseo High School into a vibrant welcome center, recital hall, and administrative hub. The design introduces a fully contemporary interior within the preserved historic shell, inserting a finely tuned 250-seat recital hall into the volume of the original gymnasium. Monumental windows and structural elements were retained, while tiered seating, an acoustic stage shell, and performance infrastructure were seamlessly integrated. Former classrooms were reconfigured into offices, seminar rooms, lounges, and clinical instructional space, while the iconic entrance tower now serves as a triple-height gathering space for admissions and events. With 144 geothermal wells and a rooftop rainwater harvesting system, Doty Hall stands as a model for sustainable academic adaptive reuse in New York State.
