VASSAR COLLEGE OBSERVATORY RENOVATION
Institutional Design Vassar
Designing Spaces That Inspire Learning and Connection
ABOUT THE PROJECT:
The Maria Mitchell Observatory at Vassar College, originally designed in 1864 for America’s first woman astronomer, was thoughtfully reconfigured to house the College’s Education Department. This adaptive reuse project transformed the landmark observatory into faculty offices, student workspaces, a seminar room, and a library within the historic Dome Room. Contemporary glass office partitions were introduced within the original brick-bearing walls, creating a light, modern intervention that respects the building’s architectural legacy. New stairs, elevator access, climate control, and upgraded electrical systems brought the structure into compliance with current codes while preserving its cultural significance. This project was completed in collaboration with Kliment Halsband Architects.
