WESTMINSTER ROAD: A BROOKLYN HOME RENOVATION
Thoughtful spaces for multigenerational family life.
ABOUT THE PROJECT:
Re: Design Architects renovated 1,084 square feet of a Westminster Road home in Brooklyn, creating welcoming, colorful spaces for a family of five whose children’s grandparents live upstairs. Completed in 2025, the residential renovation combines custom storage, flexible gathering spaces, and thoughtful interior design to support everyday routines and multigenerational family life. The family needed a place for muddy boots and backpacks, more room for shared meals, and a primary bedroom that felt restful and complete. Our design brings these needs together while celebrating the home’s historic character and the family’s personality.
A Custom Mudroom That Simplifies Daily Life
Just off the entry, a new family mudroom creates a dedicated place for coats, shoes, backpacks, and baseball bats. Integrated custom millwork keeps everyday essentials organized and makes the transition from outdoors to indoors easier. Tile from Grow House Grow inspired the mudroom’s color palette, with coordinating cabinetry and sconce lighting turning a practical space into a cheerful welcome home.
Colorful Living and Dining Spaces for Family Gatherings
The living and dining rooms balance daily comfort with the flexibility to host extended family. An extendable dining table provides room for holiday meals, while new furnishings introduce soft shapes, cheerful colors, and sculptural lighting. Voutsa patterned wallpaper defines the dining area within the connected living and dining spaces. Original wood molding, painted a deep sage green drawn from the wallpaper, connects the new design to the home’s existing details. Linear uplighting highlights the pattern, bringing depth and warmth to the room. Staggered mid-century chandeliers add a sculptural focal point above the dining table. Artwork commissioned by the client complements the room’s palette and adds another personal layer.
Custom Stained Glass Inspired by the Home’s History
After learning that a previous homeowner had removed stained glass, we commissioned local stained glass artist Soft Shapes to create a custom piece for the dining room. Designed to feel at home within the existing architecture, the new stained glass reconnects the room with a lost feature while contributing a distinctive piece of craftsmanship for the family to enjoy.
A Restful Primary Bedroom with Built-In Storage
The primary bedroom redesign replaced a collection of temporary furnishings with a cohesive retreat for two busy parents. By reclaiming space from an awkward hallway, we added a custom dresser and built-in vanity nook. A revised wall layout improves how the room functions, while carefully selected furniture balances comfort and storage. Peaceful colors, layered lighting, cozy reading spots, and a vintage stained glass window give the bedroom a personal, settled feel.
